As Rotarians look to the year ahead, the majority of us will share an expectation of good health, financial security and personal happiness. Meanwhile, 2005 will offer little for the millions of people around the Indian Ocean who are desperate for food, clean water and safe shelter.
The aftermath of the most devastating tsunamis on record is a human tragedy of vast proportions. Following the initial massive damage, coastal communities in eight countries around the Indian Ocean must deal with thirst, hunger, disease and lack of shelter.
There are many ways each of us can help relieve the pain and suffering of tsunami victims. Cash donations via the The Rotary Foundation/Solidarity in South Asia Appeal, Red Cross International Response Fund, Medecins Sans Frontieres, UNICEF, Save the Children, Oxfam and World Vision will be designated for the current crisis, providing immediate, vital support to the victims in need.
Rotary eClub One is supporting the ShelterBox project. Initiated by the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in England, Rotarians are packing and dispatching survival boxes to tsunami-affected communities.
Each Shelter Box provides the basic survival needs for 10 people.
