MEMORANDUM
TO ALL MEMBERS OF ROTARY eCLUB ONE
PRESIDENT'S REPORT 2005 - 2006
CLUB SERVICE & ADMINISTRATION
PE Gerry Roberts, Secretary Jackie Grant, and
Treasurer Gary Fletcher have streamlined much of our administration
in recent months. I am grateful for their expertise, commitment and
attention to detail. Gary
has implemented a new backend engine on our website to facilitate
more efficient administration of visitor reports and data analysis.
Our Newsletter, edited by Jackie, has become our primary means of
keeping our members informed.
MEMBERSHIP
We have achieved our target of 40 members by June
30. Congratulations to all who supported this effort and thanks to
Angus Robinson for his splendid administration.
PROJECTS
Throughout the year there were two categories of
projects - PERSONAL PROJECTS conceived and implemented by individual
Rotarians as a mandatory requirement of membership, and CLUB
PROJECTS selected by the Board as commitments of the club.
PERSONAL PROJECTS
The wide range of members' community service
projects was impressive. Over 30 projects were submitted to
Community Service Director Tom Green for service hours recognition.
It is pleasing to see our members identifying needs in their home
communities and beyond, and then acting to make a difference. Some
examples include Habitat for Humanity in North
Carolina, Seniors Golden Games in
California, hospice visitation in
Oregon, children's playground in
Mongolia, wind-up radios for remote
villages in Rwanda,
Girl Guides service in
Canada, work book distribution in
Philippines,
sailing lessons for teenagers at risk in
Washington state, Downes
Syndrome education in
Italy, and Court Advocate
volunteering in Georgia USA.
CLUB PROJECT - SAFE WATER MATCHING GRANT
Under the leadership of Brett Edwards the safe
water project in
Mexico will proceed. Brett is to be
congratulated on his persistence and his attention to detail.
CLUB PROJECT - LA MULITA WATER TRANSPORT
Brett Edwards has kept us informed on design and
testing of prototype wheeled water carts for the transport of safe
drinking water from collection points to village dwelling places in
Mexico. When manufacture of a
proven design commences we will support and promote this initiative
in several countries.
CLUB PROJECT - VOCATIONAL STUDY TEAM
The team comprised an impressive group of MS
professionals from USA,
Australia,
New Zealand
and Denmark.
Dr Beverly Noyes of the MS Society provided a wellconceived
and well-managed professional program. The Rotary
Club of Denver
Mile High replaced Rotary Club of Denver as the host club. VST
plaques have been mailed to each member of the team. Tim Mowbray,
Gerry Roberts and Dee Roberts ensured that the week was positive,
productive and enjoyable for each participant.
CLUB PROJECT - SHELTERBOX
Our commitment, by way of cash contributions,
website promotion and our display at District Conference, made this
one of our major club projects this year. Gerry Roberts championed
this project and his enthusiasm was shared by fellow members.
CLUB PROJECT - ADVANCED RYLA
After an uncertain start, our organising
committee (Samira and Jason) mentored by PDG Talee Crowe, and
supported by our Youth Chair Carol Steen, are in the final stages of
preparation for event in
Denver in August.
CLUB PROJECT - HURRICANE KATRINA & CYCLONE LARRY
Our support of District 6200 (Louisiana)
and District 9550 (Queensland)
has contributed to the restoration work being undertaken by
Rotarians.
CLUB PROJECT - MATERNITY PACKS
This "whole of club" project received excellent
report from our members and we were able to provide maternity packs
to 154 expectant mothers in East Timor.
CLUB PROJECT - CHILDREN'S CRECHE
Construction of this crèche for the children of
mothers attending health and nutrition classes in
East Timor has been described as "a magnificent
success".
CLUB PROJECT - RAIN WATER TANK
The rain water tank has been installed at the
accommodation cottage located at the vegetable garden teaching site
in East Timor.
CLUB PROJECT - EAST TIMOR
FRIENDSHIP SCHOOLS PROJECT
Rotary eClub One is one of 6 Rotary clubs that
will support this three-year program that will link schools in East
Timor with schools in
Australia. Each Rotary club will
contribute US$1,900 per year for three years.
CLUB PROJECT - FOSTER PARENTS RECOGNITION DINNER
This was the first project of Rotary eClub One
and we continue to support it. Brett Edwards attended the function
as our representative.
CLUB PROJECT - RANFURLY LIBRARY BOOK AID
We sponsored the provision of 12,500 books for
school and community libraries in needy communities in
Fiji, Vanuatu,
Solomon Islands and
Tonga.
CLUB PROJECT - FAMILY STORYTELLER
This parent - child reading project in the Galt
school district in
California is designed to improve reading
and comprehension skills in families where English is the second
language. Sandra Trousdale and Carol Steen will monitor this project
to measure its effectiveness for implementation elsewhere.
CLUB EVENT - ANNUAL DINNER
The
Denver dinner featured our reports from the
Four Avenues of Service, the Professional Excellence Award to Jimmie
Heuga, PHF presentations, ShelterBox briefing, ARYLA introduction
and splendid musical entertainment. Carol Steen organised printing,
Gerry & Dee Roberts took care of table decorations and
Gary Fletcher prepared the audio visual
material. Seventy guests attended.
CLUB EVENT - DISTRICT CONFERENCE
Our club was well-represented at the conference
in Vail, where I had the privilege of being the MC. Our ShelterBox
display in the House of Friendship generated considerable interest
because Rotarians could see the box contents deployed. We received
two District Awards - Best Website (shared with Smoky Hill)
presented to our webmaster Gary Fletcher, and Best Membership Growth
(small club) presented to PE Gerry Roberts who stood in for Angus
Robinson who was unable to attend.

CLUB HISTORY
PP John Minter is bringing our club history up to
date. John leaves us next week to take up membership of the Rotary
Club of Florence in his local community. However he has offered to
submit a history update to June 30, 2006. We are very grateful to
John for his kind offer.
GENERAL COMMENTS
The progress of Rotary eClub One during my
two-year Presidency has exceeded my expectations. The generous
commitment of time, effort and resources by so many of our members
has been magnificent.
My only disappointment has been our inability to
engage effectively with a minority of our members who are on the
"fringe". This is a club for active Rotarians. It is not a "holding
club" for inactive Rotarians who just want to wear the pin. This is
why teams within the club would be a friendly way to engage with
members who might otherwise not become involved. I have seen the
teams concept work well in other Rotary clubs.
Rotary eClub One has achieved its service
objectives and created warm friendships no matter where our members
are located. The club has earned Rotary Presidential Citations in
2004 - 2005 and in 2005 - 2006. PP John Minter led our establishment
stage. I have had the privilege of leading our development stage. As
our third President Gerry Roberts takes office we will commence the
consolidation stage that will shape our long-term future. We have an
exciting year ahead!
At the conclusion of my final Board meeting as
President, my fellow members of the Board moved and adopted a formal
motion expressing their unanimous appreciation of my Rotary service.
I thank them for this kind gesture.
