ECLUB ONE OBJECTIVE
To keep Rotarians connected, informed, and inspired.
A Makeup is bonus!
by John Minter, President eClub One

Occasionally we receive remarks about online make-ups, questioning the legitimacy and value of our online International Club Service. I can only say, after more than 24 months of offering the service, the concern  has little, if any foundation. There is no evidence of systematic abuse.

There is a mountain of evidence of the value to those Rotarians who find themselves suddenly stranded, unable to reach their own club or a neighboring club to keep their attendance commitment. I read the make-up reports regularly.

Yes, you can demonstrate that one can do a make-up in one minute.  I can do it in 30 seconds.  But who is cheated? -- Rotarians who ignore the 4-Way Test and the opportunity to learn more about Rotary than they normally get in their local club. That has no impact on the make-up's value to hundreds of visitors who find they are connected, informed, and inspired by their visit to eClub One.

As it has always been, responsibility for accepting make-ups from any venue is with the local club Secretary. Our experience is that if a Rotarian is making up frequently with eClub or any RC without good reason, something is going on - or not - at the local club.

But let some of our visitors speak for themselves. This message just in this morning (3/20/04) from Guam:

Dear Pres. John,

Warm greetings to you and the member of your Club from the Rotary Club of Tumon Bay, Guam, USA – District 2750!

My name is Frank Crisostomo-Kaaihue and I am the VP for the Club.  This April 17th, I will be conducting the PETS training on the RI website; the RI-Club Administration Software; and will be featuring your club as the “best alternative” for a make-up meeting “without the lunch”!  For this section of the training, I will hyperlink to your message on Program 5 and feature the Proposed Enactment 04-18 to the RI 2004 Council on Legislation and hopefully convince the participants that 100% attendance is just a click away!

I have been encouraging my fellow Rotarians from my Club to do make-ups on Eclub One whenever they are not able to attend our weekly meetings.  We currently have 102 members and our attendance has been dismal to say the least.  I am the RI-CAS administrator and many a times I feel so down because of our attendance.  The good news is that our in-coming Secretary (Roland Franquez) has made up several times online as well as other members of the Club!

Anyway, many thanks to you and your club for providing the opportunity to meet online.  I am a firm believer that when an individual takes the time to read any of your programs, they learn more about the ideals of Rotary than a whole month of attendance!
[The bold format is mine]

Finally, I extend an invitation to you or any member of your Club to visit Guam and the Rotary Club of Tumon Bay! I am with the Small Business Development Center at the University of Guam.

Regards in Rotary…

Frank

Then these comments from the make-up reports filed just yesterday, March 19. (We currently average about 150 makeups per day from an average *daily* attendance of 330.)

As a new Rotarian, this is my first on-line make-up. I'll certainly hit the site more often as I found the articles to be informative and helpful in helping me understand Rotary and how it works around the globe.

Liked about the eClub One site:

The web site is ideal for the new member and not so new member as

I'm certain that many long time members can benefit from the quick and easy articles produced. For example, The Model Rotarian, and The Power of Two, were good articles to help focus on Rotary.

I enjoyed hearing of the other clubs around the world, for instance, the club in Shanghai, China. I would not have thought that Rotary existed in China but, then again, China seems to be opening up to the west over the past number of years.

The presentation contained many articles and features on PolioPlus, including words of praise from world leaders and political figures.

I did not know that the campaign to eradicate polio was at 99 percent completion. Rotary hopes to end polio worldwide by 2005, the organization’s centennial.

I like the way this prgoram was organized, with many articles, quotes, photos. It was easy to read and understand. I am so proud that Rotarians have donated $600 million to this effort.

There are many facets to world affairs and understandings of different religions and motives for economics. It's really difficult to get to the motives of any political or war actions.

I was hospitalized and am behind two meetings. This allows me to keep my perfect attendance of 7 years and anticipate my 8th year of perfect attendance. It means a lot to me and to my fellow club members to maintain a high level of club performance.

Council On Legislation Considers On Line Makeup (Rating: Excellent)

Commented:

For a few members of our club the online make-up is an excellent way for keeping our attendance record well above par. I am trying to recruit more members from my classification and many have expressed their concern about meetings and make-ups. The eClub makes us more attractive and relevant.

Liked about the eClub One site:

Very easy to navigate, the variety of articles is great and it lets me explore different areas of Rotary that I wouldn't get by staying at my home club.

Suggested:

Work on an intereactive forum that will enable different members to interact with each other. It is a good way to spend the time.

There you have it.  These remarks are typical of the several hundred make-ups filed with us each week.

If our meeting took place on one day, in one room, each week we would have to seat 2,500 Rotarians from more than 500 cities in over 90 different countries, speaking many different languages.

About 40% are there to make-up. The others are there, presumably, to get something of value to add to their Rotary experience.

We know these facts from tracking each visit to eClub One. Clearly this is an opportunity to keep Rotarians connected, informed, and inspired.

Every Rotary Club has the same obligation.  We just do it a bit differently, that's all.

We do not advocate the online make-up venue to replace anything but rather to expand and enhance the wonderful world of Rotary created by clubs just like yours and Rotarians just like you.

Yours in Rotary Service,

John Minter, Founding President

Rotary eClub One of D5450
