Rewarding
Time for Teachers
Eleven years ago, Chris Joscelyne, now President of Rotary eClub One, joined a small committee of Rotarians in Sydney Australia, to discuss school teachers and what could be done to acknowledge their vital role in the lives of students.
“We thought the time was right to do something that presented Australian teaching in a positive light, as being up to international standards in innovation and performance,” said Emeritus Professor Rolf Prince who was part of that initial discussion.
With support from other members of the Rotary Club of Sydney, the group
established an annual award program for teachers in New South Wales, Australia,
demonstrating outstanding innovation and performance.
In the course of this year, three teachers from Australia will be packing their bags for the trip of their professional lifetimes. One will travel to the United States, another to Europe and the third to Pacific Island nations.
They’ll be immersing themselves in academic environments abroad because they won the 2005 Rotary Club of Sydney Awards for Innovation in the Vocation of Teaching.
The awards acknowledge outstanding teachers, as well as presenting them with an overseas return airfare to an agreed institution and an allowance for accommodation and local travel.
The program is supported by schools and teachers, and is recognised as a pinnacle of teaching achievement.
The travel opportunity allows winners to learn more about their chosen fields of
education, to demonstrate their achievements overseas and act as ambassadors for
the Australian teaching profession as well as Rotary.
