Day
9 Murren – Zurich
April 12, 2005.
Today was a travel day as we said farewell to Murren and headed off to Zurich
for three days in the banking capital of the world. After breakfast we took a
last walk through the village of Murren. It was a glorious morning with the sun
rising above the peaks of the Alps. We got some great pictures.
We packed and took the two trains back down to
Lauterbrunnen where our driver was waiting to take us to Zurich. The drive is
about 90 miles and took us just over two hours. Again the vistas were gorgeous.
We drove down the Lauterbrunnen valley to Interlaken and then wound our way up a
narrow road above Interlaken and down to the next valley. The roads in
Switzerland are amazing. Many of them are built into the sides of the mountains
and you drive through hundreds of tunnels, some as long as three miles.
Once
we were in the next valley we were on our way to Lucerne and then out of the
mountains as we approached Zurich. Zurich is a mixture of the old and the new
and has a population of 380,000. We are staying right on the lake in the Baur au
Lac hotel. This five star hotel is situated right on the edge of Lake Zurich.
The service in the hotel is amazing. They sent their assistant director of
computer services to our room to make sure our wireless connection was working
properly. It was sure nice to get connected again. After four days of not being
able to respond to anyone it took me over three hours to get caught up.
This evening we had a quiet dinner in our room
with an excellent Chablis wine. Tomorrow we’ll start exploring the sites of
Zurich.
Stay tuned for Day 10 in my “Around the World in
30 Days” saga.
