SHELTERBOXES IN VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA

Australia has suffered its greatest bushfire disaster, massive infernos that destroyed whole towns to the north of Melbourne, in the state of Victoria.

The death toll stands at 181 but, as police forensic investigators continue their search, this number of victims is likely to rise.

More than 1800 homes were destroyed as giant fires raced at frightening speed across a vast area of Victoria. Thousands were made homeless in several small towns as an area of 500,000 hectares (1,235,500 acres) of farmland and eucalypt forests were reduced to ash.

The communities of Kinglake and Marysville suffered the worst of the fires. All but three buildings in Marysville, home to about 500 people, were reduced to rubble.

Australians have been horrified at the suffering of their fellow countrymen. They have opened their hearts and pockets with massive donations of food, clothing, toys and cash.

As at 14 February 2009 the Australian Red Cross bushfire appeal had raised A$77 million in cash donations to aid the victims.

The first 50 ShelterBoxes have been delivered to the Whittlesea recovery area, with more to follow. Of these, the first five ShelterBoxes were sponsored by Rotary E-Club One.

Jenni Heenan of ShelterBox Australia reports: “When people saw the contents of the green ShelterBoxes, they could not believe they were being given a tent, blankets, a cooker and other equipment … and at no cost,” Jenni said adding, “they are so grateful … tearfully saying their need is now.”

Your Rotary club can sponsor one or more ShelterBoxes for Australian bushfire victims.
