PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
JUNE 2009
ROTARY eCLUB ONE - INTERNATIONAL
By the end of this month, during my year as
Club President, I will have been overseas on
four trips – three visits to
Taiwan as well as
attendance at the RI Convention in
Birmingham,
UK. However, not
an unusual lifestyle for members of Rotary
eClub One. I am aware that various other
club members also have been ‘frequent
flyers’ away overseas from home and family,
not forgetting other members who also live
in suitcases as they trip frequently across
the large continental land-masses of
Australia,
Canada, Europe and the US.
In all, Rotary eClub One’s 45 members are
scattered right across the world,
specifically in Australia, Canada, Germany,
Italy, Japan, Mexico, Philippines,
Switzerland, UK, and the USA.
And not forgetting the some 11,000 Rotarians
who visit and make-up on the site each
month; these good folk are located
predominantly in the
US, Japan, Canada,
Australia and India,
although they are sourced from some 600
cities within just over 100 countries!
Like Rotary International itself, Rotary
eClub One is ‘headquartered’ in the
USA, quite specifically
within D5450,
Colorado
with influences and activity reaching right
across the globe.
In recent years, the rapid growth and
development of the Rotary eClub pilot
project has been made possible by the
enabling technologies of information and
communications, underpinned by the internet
platform. These technologies are evolving
rapidly. Whilst ‘Rotary Twitter’ is not yet
mainstream, it is reassuring that this
approach to personal communications seems
far more relevant to the work and value
system of Rotary than experimenting with
virtual communications such as ‘second
life’.
One of the key high level goals of Rotary
eClub One is to continue to identify and
implement ‘leading edge’, web 2.0 and web
3.0 technologies and information
communication technologies which can both
enhance the collaborative interaction and
connectivity of its programs and activities,
and ensure the delivery of ‘best practice’
back-end administrative systems to underpin
the operations of the club.
In the final analysis, the world's first web
based Rotary club, Rotary eClub One is just
like any traditional Rotary club. Members
meet on-line to coordinate service projects
and enjoy fellowship with like-minded
Rotarians. Our website continues to keep
thousands of Rotarians globally connected,
informed and inspired. In this respect,
Rotary eClub One is truly an international
operation, delivering Rotary services and
promoting Rotary value systems globally.
