Rotary Clubs Wear Spots and Raise Lots

Rotarians in Britain and Ireland Help Raise Funds for BBC's Children in Need Program.

The official partnership between Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland (RIBI) and BBC Children in Need has resulted in a staggering amount raised for the charity that helps disadvantaged children across the country. Rotary clubs have often supported BBC Children in Need over the years but this latest combined effort has resulted in even more funds being raised for the good cause.

It was mascot mayhem at Horsham when Pudsey teamed up with the local mascots and took over the bandstandPudsy, "everone's favourite yellow teddy," led the campaign by calling on everyone to wear their spots and raise lots on Friday, November 18, 2011. Rotary clubs across the country put on a range of fun events including meet Pudsey days and cabaret nights.

Rotary in Britain and Ireland President Ray Burman stated, "This is a wonderful partnership between Rotary and BBC Children in Need. Every day, everywhere Rotary clubs are working hard to improve the lives of others and it is so fitting that we are linking with BBC Children in Need."

Early reports suggested that clubs raised nearly £100,000 through a range of incredible activities. From barn dances, quiz nights, casino nights and dog walks, to children's fun days, mascot mayhem, collections at Terminal 5 Heathrow Airport, and musical performances, Rotary clubs pulled out the stops to involve everyone with helping the charity.

Rotary was featured on the national BBC broadcast as one of the official partners along with ticker tape mentions of club achievements.

Amanda Watkin, RIBI BBC Children in Need Coordinator says clubs have really pulled out the stops: "Give a Rotary club a challenge and they will rise to it. Quite often people think that Rotary is about shaking cans but the number and range of activities really shows that we are far more active. Rotary works with communities and everyone has a tremendous time in the process."
